Daniel Finch has been appointed as the new chief executive of Star Entertainment in Brisbane, Australia. Finch, who previously served as managing director of Expedia Australia for over nine years, will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the Star Brisbane casino, which is set to open at a new location in August. Prior to his role at Expedia, Finch worked in various sales roles for Sofitel Brisbane Central, the Constellation Hotel Group, Carlton Crest Hotel Brisbane, and the Millennium Mayfair London.
In a statement, Finch expressed his excitement about joining Star and emphasized the significance of the upcoming opening of The Star Brisbane in 2024. He also outlined his ambition to drive a high-performance culture and deliver five-star experiences for visitors.
Finch’s appointment is part of a wider organizational restructure at Star, which involves creating property-based operational business units across different locations in Australia. In addition to Finch, Jess Mellor has been promoted to lead the Gold Coast location, while the CEO for the Sydney venue is yet to be appointed.
Commenting on Finch’s appointment, Star CEO and managing director Robbie Cooke praised Finch’s leadership capability and highlighted his experience in launching new hotels, which will be valuable as the company prepares to open The Star Brisbane and the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct.
In addition to the announcement of Finch’s appointment, it was revealed that Star Entertainment has been given an additional six months to demonstrate its fitness to operate its casinos in Queensland following a series of failings. Star was sanctioned in December 2022 and fined AU$100.0m after an inquiry found the group “unsuitable” to hold a license in Queensland. The deadline for compliance has been extended to 31 May 2024, granting Star additional time to rectify the regulatory issues.
