Allwyn has recently appointed Mark Hughes as its new chief security officer, as the company prepares to take control of the UK National Lottery in six weeks. Hughes will be responsible for leading all areas of security for the National Lottery, with Allwyn set to officially take over on February 1, 2024.
Prior to joining Allwyn, Hughes served as the chief information security officer for Smart DCC and spent 16 years in security-focused roles at Vodafone, Borders, and House of Fraser. He expressed his enthusiasm for joining Allwyn and being part of the National Lottery’s journey, stating that working for an organization that makes dreams come true and contributes to good causes is a huge privilege.
Andria Vidler, Allwyn’s UK CEO, welcomed Hughes to the team and emphasized the critical importance of preserving the security of The National Lottery, especially as they roll out their ambitious plans for its transformation.
Allwyn successfully secured the fourth National Lottery license, beating out competitors including The New Lottery Company and Italy’s Sisal, as well as the incumbent Camelot. The previous license, held by Camelot since the National Lottery’s launch in 1994, was initially set to expire in August 2023 but was extended by six months.
The decision to award the license to Allwyn by the Gambling Commission faced legal challenges from Camelot and IGT, which led to a suspension of the licensing choice. However, Camelot later withdrew its high court challenge, removing the final obstacle for Allwyn to receive the license.
In addition to acquiring the National Lottery, Allwyn also acquired US-facing business Camelot Lottery Solutions and has since rebranded it as Allwyn North America. These acquisitions have contributed to a 98% rise in consolidated total revenue for Allwyn in Q3, with the UK being the core market and driving significant growth for the company.
Overall, Allwyn’s total revenue for the nine months to September 2023 reached €5.70bn, representing a significant increase from the previous year. As the company continues to expand and prepare for the National Lottery takeover, these acquisitions and revenue growth are expected to play a key role in its future success.
