Underdog Sports has entered into a partnership with McConnell Golf in order to support its application for a sports betting license in North Carolina. The agreement stipulates that Underdog will be responsible for hosting, managing, operating, and supporting online gambling services in conjunction with McConnell Golf-operated Sedgefield Country Club, located in Greensboro, NC.

This partnership is a crucial part of Underdog’s license application process, as operators looking to offer sports betting in North Carolina must partner with a sports team, league, or venue within the state. While Underdog has traditionally focused on daily fantasy sports, the company has recently expanded into sports betting. Despite having secured a sports betting license in Ohio in late 2022, Underdog has not yet launched wagering services.

Jeremy Levine, the founder and co-CEO of Underdog, expressed excitement about the prospect of offering sports betting to North Carolinians and highlighted the company’s commitment to providing new and innovative ways for sports fans to enjoy their favorite activities. McConnell Golf’s COO, Christian Anastasiadis, also welcomed the partnership, emphasizing the importance of offering a fresh approach to sports competitions and tournaments.

North Carolina is currently in the process of reviewing applications from nine operators seeking sports betting licenses. While a specific launch date for the market has not yet been announced, there is hope that legal betting will go live by March of this year. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission is overseeing the licensing process, with the timeline for launch largely dependent on the duration of the application review process.

Several notable operators are vying for licenses in North Carolina, including BetMGM, which has partnered with the Charlotte Motor Speedway, and DraftKings, which has established an exclusive daily fantasy sports partnership with Nascar in the US and Canada. Additionally, Fanatics Betting and Gaming has entered into a partnership with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, positioning itself as the team’s official sports betting partner as part of its market entry strategy in North Carolina.
