Sports Betting in Arizona Surpasses $610 Million in September
In September, consumers in Arizona spent a whopping $610.7 million on sports betting, marking the highest monthly total since March. This figure was 13.5% higher than the amount spent last year and 13.3% more than the total for August 2023. This also marks the sixth time that the monthly sports betting handle surpassed $600 million in Arizona.
Of the total amount spent, $605.2 million was bet with online operators, while $4.0 million was spent at retail sportsbooks. Overall, players won a total of $550.6 million from their sports betting activities in September.
When it comes to adjusted gross event wagering receipts before free bets, the total amounted to $59.7 million, showing an 8.2% increase from September 2022 and nearly double the amount reported in August. Online gross receipts made up the majority, totaling $59.0 million, while retail receipts were only $473,199.
September also saw free bets and promotional credits totaling $27.1 million, with the vast majority coming from online operators. After accounting for these free bets, adjusted gross event wagering receipts reached $32.6 million, showing a 6.2% increase from September 2022 and a 52.3% increase from August.
Online sports betting accounted for the majority of the adjusted Arizona total at $32.0 million, with retail contributing $447,593. It is clear that players in Arizona prefer to bet online rather than in-person.
In terms of tax, the state collected a total of $3.2 million in September, with the majority coming from online betting, and retail’s contribution only amounting to $35,807. Online betting is taxed at a rate of 10% while retail is taxed at 8%. Overall, the data indicates a significant surge in sports betting activity in Arizona, particularly in the online sector.
